Health of Black Women

  

 

A glaring disparity exists in pregnancy outcomes of African American and Caucasian women. Twice as many black babies die in infancy as do white babies, and black women also have a three times greater risk of dying during pregnancy than white women, one University of Michigan Health System press release reported.

In the United States, there are disparities in rates of pregnancy problems among women of different skin colors. One previously unexplored possible influence on the disparity in adverse birth outcomes is maternal vitamin D status.

 

  

  

72 Percent of African-American Children Born To Unwed Mothers

According to government statistics, 72 percent of African-American children are born to unmarried Mothers and that is something that Dr. Natalie Carroll, an obstetrician who has dedicated her 40-year career to helping black women, feels is unfortunate.

“The girls don’t think they have to get married. I tell them children deserve a mama and a daddy. They really do. A Mama can’t give it all. And neither can a Daddy, not by themselves,” Dr. Carroll says. “Part of the reason is because you can only give that which you have. A Mother cannot give all that a man can give. A truly involved father figure offers more fullness to a child’s life.”

 

This is not just an opinion. According to Children-our investment.org, homes without fathers ultimately affect children in numerous tragic ways:

 

• 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes

• 90% of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes

• 85% of all children who show behavior disorders come from fatherless homes

• 80% of rapists with anger problems come from fatherless homes

• 71% of all high school dropouts come from fatherless homes

• 75% of all adolescent patients in chemical abuse centers come from fatherless homes

• 85% of all youths in prison come from fatherless homes.

 

 

Not only are these statistics heartbreaking, it applies to African-American homes in disproportionate numbers. Compared to the 72 percent in our communities, 17 percent of Asians, 29 percent of whites, 53 percent of Hispanics and 66 percent of Native Americans were born to unwed mothers in 2008, the most recent year for which government figures are available. The rate for the overall U.S. population was 41 percent.

 

 

 

 

Young Black Males Dying in Detroit at Alarming Rates

African-American males in Detroit between the ages of 15 and 24 are dying at a rate that is roughly seven times higher than the rest of the Detroit population. If they were dying at the same rate as everyone else, there would be one death every three weeks. Instead, there are two black men dying every single week.

“The overwhelming majority of abortion facilities are in minority neighborhoods. We think they need to know that,” said Kim Speirs, Heroic Media’s director of communications.Marissa Gabrysch, a representative from Heroic, elaborated with even more unsettling statistics: “While African Americans make up 13 percent of the population in America, they represent 36 percent of the abortions in the United States. Black People Have No Wealth In America

   

The typical black family had about three times as much wealth in 1983 than it did in 2009 ? $6,300 in inflation-adjusted terms in 1983 compared with just $2,200 in 2009, according to an analysis of the Federal Reserve?s Survey of Consumer Finances. The figures are shocking. In 2001, the median net worth of a white family stood at $124,600. For blacks, the median wealth was $12,500. For every dollar of wealth owned by the typical white family, the typical black family had 10 cents. Remember, these are figures for middle-class families.By 2007, the median wealth for white families hit $143,600, thanks to the housing bubble and a stock-market rally. But blacks were left behind. They don?t own many financial assets, and they missed out on the housing bubble almost completely. Their net worth fell to $9,300. For every dollar of capital owned by middle-class whites, middle-class blacks had 6 cents.Then things got even uglier. By 2009, the typical white family had $94,600 in wealth, compared with $2,200 for blacks, according to an analysis by economist Edward Wolff. Blacks had 2 cents on the dollar.

 

The average white family home is worth $60,000 more than that of the average African American family. Also, less than half of all black families own a home, compared to three-quarters of all white families. Additionally, a Brandeis University study found that while white family wealth rose from $22,000 to $100,000 over the past 23 years, black family wealth rose by just $3,000 to $5,000.

   

  

  

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

Rising Death Toll During Economic Crisis Signals Need for Mental Health Care

      

      

Las Vegas Police recently announced that murder-suicides are on the rise because of “a bad economy.”Last month, a 29-year-old unemployed South Carolina mother, sent shockwaves across the nation when she confessed to committing filicide when she killed her two sons because she had no means of taking care of them. 

And the mayor of an affluent Dallas suburb reportedly killed her 19-year-old daughter before turning the gun on herself in the face of financial distress, including almost losing her home to foreclosure. 

Indeed, these are tough economic times. And mental health professionals report that people are growing increasingly desperate and calling hotlines for help. 

Terrie M. Williams, author of ‘Black Pain: Real Talk For When There’s Nowhere to Go But Up’ and a licensed clinical social worker, told Black Voices that today’s economic environment is when people vulnerable to depression or those who are depressed need to take the extra steps to seek mental health treatment.  

   

  

 

 

 

36.5 million live in poverty in United States: report

WASHINGTON (AFP) — More than one in ten Americans, or 36.5 million people, live in poverty in the United States, with children and blacks the worst hit, an annual report by the US Census Bureau showed Tuesday.

 

According to the report, around 12.8 million children under the age of 18, or around one-third of the poor, existed in 2006 on incomes below the threshold used by the Census Bureau to determine who lives in poverty.

The number of children without health insurance swelled by 700,000 in 2006 compared with the previous year, according to the report, which also showed that the total number of Americans without health coverage had risen by three million to 47 million.

  

In percentage terms, three times more black people — 24.3 percent — lived in poverty than the 8.2 percent of white people who did, the report showed.   

The number of poor out of the total US population of 302 million was equivalent to the entire state of California — paradoxically one of the richest states — one-and-a-half times the population of Malaysia or nearly everyone in the central European nation of Poland living in poverty.

Fluoride Added to Children’s Milk in Schools

    

    

    

Fluoride is being added to children’s milk in 42 schools throughout the city of Sheffield in the UK, despite the chemical’s known links to liver and kidney damage, cancer and the lowering of IQ.

 

 

 

  

    

It takes just one “bad” meal — a cheeseburger, fries and a soda, fried chicken and biscuits, a slab of chocolate cake and ice cream — to do damage to your body, according to new research. 

    

The good news, however, is that eating just one good meal will start to repair the damage. 

This occurs because, when you eat, your body breaks down the food into glucose (sugar), lipids (fats) and amino acids (the building blocks of protein).  

    

The desire to eat junk food is a vicious cycle, the researchers pointed out, as the more you eat it the more your body craves it. This occurs because junk food distorts your hormonal profile, stimulating your appetite and causing you to crave unhealthy foods — while making you feel unsatisfied when you eat only healthy ones.

    

The risky blood sugar spikes that follow a junk food meal are most likely to occur in people who don’t exercise, or who carry weight around their abdomen.

 

  

 

   

  

 

Black Unemployment Rate Increases 700% More than White

Well, the nation-wide suffering for African Americans has just intensified with the recent unemployment data delivered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s most recent report showed that while white unemployment only went up from 8.6 percent to 8.7 percent, black unemployment went up from 15.6 percent to 16.3 percent. This increase is at a rate that is 700 percent higher than the increase for white Americans. 

    

The numbers tell an interesting and sad story about the forgotten economic hardships being felt by black people all across America. First, black unemployment is nearly double that of white Americans. While the rest of America finds itself screaming in pain over unemployment rates between eight and nine percent, black America is asked to remain silent about unemployment rates as high as 15 – 16 percent.

 

 

 

  

 

While U.S. government officials are not acknowledging African American economic hardship, the United Nations is. As of April, the UN announced that it is investigating whether consistent black unemployment in America is a human rights violation. 

    

Black male unemployment is shockingly high, rising from 16.7 percent to 17.3 percent. This compares to a rate increase of 8.8 percent to 8.9 percent for white males. In other words, black male unemployment is 94 percent higher than the rate for white men. Unfortunately, this has become the norm for the African American male. 

    

Black women also watched their unemployment rate rise from 12.9 percent to 13.2 percent, while white women saw no increase at all. At this point, white females have the lowest unemployment rate of any demographic group. Black women have an unemployment rate that is roughly 85 percent higher than white females. 

 

 

 

 

The worst group of all are black teenagers. Their unemployment rate already stood at a startling 40.6 percent last month. This month, it rose to 45.4 percent, which is not only the highest unemployment figure of any group, it is also 90 percent higher than the unemployment rate for white teenagers, which held steady with a modest increase from 23.5 percent to 23.8 percent. The high unemployment rate for African American teens is likely one of the causes for massive amounts of teen violence and persistently high rates of black incarceration. When kids don’t have jobs, they find something else to do. What they choose to do on their own is not always productive. 

    

I am not sure how bad things have to get, how many black people have to be homeless or how many unemployment applications we must fill out before we can get our leaders in Washington to realize that while 9.6 percent unemployment is horrible for the nation, 16.3 percent unemployment in black America is absolutely devastating. 

   

 

AP Probe Finds Drugs in Drinking Water

  

A vast array of pharmaceuticals — including antibiotics, anti-convulsants, mood stabilizers and sex hormones — have been found in the drinking water supplies of at least 41 million Americans, an Associated Press investigation shows. To be sure, the concentrations of these pharmaceuticals are tiny, measured in quantities of parts per billion or trillion, far below the levels of a medical dose. Also, utilities insist their water is safe, recent studies — which have gone virtually unnoticed by the general public — have found alarming effects on human cells and wildlife.

  

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 

   

 

Cold meds send 7,000 kids to hospitals

   

ATLANTA – Cough and cold medicines send about 7,000 children to hospital emergency rooms each year, the U.S. government said Monday in its first national estimate of the problem. 

About two-thirds of the cases were children who took the medicines unsupervised. However, about one-quarter involved cases in which parents gave the proper dosage and an allergic reaction or some other problem developed, the study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. 

The study included both over-the-counter and prescription medicines. It comes less than two weeks after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned parents that over-the-counter cough and cold medicines are too dangerous for children younger than 2.
